One soldier of the Emirati-backed Hadhrami Elite(HE) forces was killed and others injured Friday in a blast in Shaher City of the Yemeni eastern governorate of Hadhramout, said security sources.
A booby-trapped bag went off while HE forces raiding a site suspected to belong for a terrorist cell in Shaher, some 60 km to the east of Hadhramout provincial capital Mukalla, said sources at the second military region stationed in Mukalla.
Suicides, blasts and assassinations have largely vanished in Hadhramout Coast districts following the withdrawal of al-Qaeda militants from Mukalla in April 2016 and the establishmentof local UAE-backed security forces.
Hadhramout Coast districts are under the control of the 2nd military region, led by Hadhramout Governor Faraj Bohsoni, and the HEforces with hostility to Muslim Brethren and other Islamic groups.
The UAE formed, trained and equipped many Yemeni military and security divisions to fight Houthis but also al-Qaeda that exploited civil war to expand its influence in the south, although the gulf state claims the group was forced out.
Yemen has been racked by an armed conflict that broke out after the Iranian-backed Houthis had ousted the internationally recognized government late in 2014.
The conflict escalated after a Saudi-led coalition intervened militarily in the country in March 2015 to reinstate the government of President Hadi, leaving tens of thousands killed, hundreds of thousands injured, and 3 million displaced.
