A Yemeni military source revealed that Saudi Arabia started building a military base after dispatching dozens of its soldiers to the island of Zuqar, located on the Red Sea between the coasts of Yemen and Eritrea, and near the Bab al-Mandab strait.

The website "Arabi 21" quoted the source, on condition of anonymity, as saying that Saudi Arabia has strengthened its military presence on the island of Zuqar, and has sent dozens of soldiers to the island, the largest island in the archipelago of Hanish, south of the Red Sea, 34 km from the Yemeni coast.

The source added that more than 50 Saudi soldiers are currently on the strategic island of Zuqar, which is controlled by local forces formed by the UAE before announcing its withdrawal from the western coast of Yemen in the past few months.

The source confirmed that the Saudi forces began constructing buildings for its soldiers inside the island, including a "command center", in a sign of the Kingdom's desire to convert it to a military base on the Red Sea.

He pointed out that the role of the Saudis has evolved from providing support to the Coast Guard forces to strengthening their military presence on the island of Zuqar.

In November, well-informed sources said that Saudi Arabia sent forces to the island of Zuqar and supplied Yemeni Coast Guard forces with warships.

The joint Yemeni forces leading the operations of the West Coast announced late last October that the Coast Guard forces of the Yemen's internationally recognized government had officially received the island of Zuqar after the withdrawal of the Emirati forces.

The spokesman for the joint forces, Colonel Waddah Al-Dubeish, said that the government’s Coast Guard forces began their work in "Zuqar", after the Emirati forces left and delivered them with full military equipment, including warships, reconnaissance and various military parts.

Zuqar is the largest island in the Hanish archipelago located between the coasts of Yemen and Eritrea, near the Bab al-Mandab strait which connect the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, and an area of about 185 square kilometers, and occupies next to the island of "Hanish" a strategic importance under their supervision of the international waterway.
