RIYADH (Debriefer)--The speaker of Yemen's Parliament Sultan Al-Barakani on Sunday stressed the importance of combined international efforts to resolve the Yemeni crisis.
At a meeting with Cathy Westley, the Chargé d'Affaires for the U.S. Embassy to Yemen, he called on the international community to exercise more pressure on the Houthi group to end its crimes against civilians in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
He accused the Iran-allied group of undermining peace efforts, reiterating the government's adherence to the option of a lasting, fair and comprehensive peace based on the Gulf Initiative, the outcomes of the national dialogue conference and the UN resolutions on Yemen.
"We are ready for peace. But the Houthi group is deliberately obstructing peace efforts and initiatives through continued military escalation and weapons smuggling and these are signs that it does not have a desire to establish peace," he said.
Westley reiterated its country's firm support to the legitimate government and Yemen's unity and stability.
The US is keen on supporting the UN efforts and new envoy to establish lasting peace and the government to assume its economic and humanitarian responsibilities, she said.
