The Yemen's internationally recognize government welcomed on Wednesday the US government imposing sanctions on Iranian entities accused by Washington of helping to smuggle weapons to Yemen.

The Yemeni "legitimate" government tweeted that it welcomed the statement issued by the US State Department regarding the imposition of sanctions on eight Iranian entities that had helped smuggle weapons from Iran to the Houthi group.

And considered that "the American decision confirms what I have repeatedly went to warn of the growing Iranian threat to the security and stability of the region and the world, in light of the continued persistence of the Tehran regime in smuggling weapons and providing financial and logistical support to the Houthi militia in a flagrant challenge to the international community and Security Council resolutions."

Earlier Wednesday, the United States imposed new financial sanctions against eight Iranian entities that helped smuggle weapons into Yemen, and three other entities linked to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

And the US State Department announced the imposition of new financial sanctions against an Iranian shipping network led by businessman Abd al-Hussein Khudari, who is accused of secretly transporting weapons to the Houthis in Yemen.

Washington has also tightened the sanctions against Mahan Aviation, which Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo has accused of transporting weapons from Iran to Yemen.

The Iranian regime uses its aviation and shipping industries to supply its regional terrorist and militant groups with weapons, directly contributing to the devastating humanitarian crises in Syria and Yemen," Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said in a statement.

Yemen has been racked by an armed conflict that broke out after the Iranian-backed Houthis had ousted the internationally-recognized government late in 2014.

The conflict escalated after a Saudi-led coalition intervened militarily in the country in March 2015 to reinstate the government of President Hadi in the Houthi-held Sana'a.
