Sana'a (Debriefer) - The Houthi foreign minister on Friday called on the UN to end the war and blockade on Yemen, as the UN celebrates its 74th anniversary.
In a letter to the UN Secretary-General, FM Hisham Sharaf called on Antonio Guterres to exert additional efforts to help end the "aggression and blockade imposed on the Yemeni people."
The Houthi official highlighted the UN role in bringing peace and achieving the sustainable development goals.
Last Tuesday, FM Sharaf said it was time to put an end to the war and the world's worst crisis suffered by Yemen for six years now.
He called on the UN special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, to launch urgent humanitarian steps paving the way for negotiations to reach peaceful settlement in Yemen.
On Wednesday, the Houthi group called on the UN to press for opening the Sana'a international airport for commercial flights.
Yemen has been racked by an armed conflict that broke out after the Iranian-backed Houthis had ousted the internationally-recognized government late in 2014.
The conflict escalated after a Saudi-led coalition intervened militarily in the country in March 2015 to reinstate the government of President Hadi.
The Saudi-led coalition has been imposing blockade on commercial aviation to and fro Sana'a airport since early August 2016, allowing only for UN and humanitarian groups' flights.
Yemenis from northern and western provinces, who want to travel abroad, have to take up to 15 hours in land trip to the city of Aden or Seyoun in Hadhramout where the airports provide limited flights abroad.
