ADEN (Debriefer)--Yemen's internationally recognised government has welcomed an announcement by the US department of state to re-impose sanctions on Iran.

The Saudi-backed government accuses Iran of supporting the Houthi group which took over the capital Sanaa and seized power in late 2014, triggering a disastrous civil war that has been continuing for six years.

Information minister, Muammar Al-Eryani, said: "We welcome the reimposition of all UN sanctions, including an arms embargo, on Iran in accordance with the 2231 resolution for 2015 within mounting US pressure on the regime in Iran," according to the government-run Saba news agency.

He accused Tehran of exploiting the nuclear deal to expand its hostile policies and export terrorism to destabilise the region through sectarian militias. Iran is supplying militias, including the Houthis, Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda, with weapons and targeting energy sources, maritime navigation and international interests, he said.

He called for further pressure and chains to prevent Iran from selling and exporting weapons that he said would inevitably end in the hands of sectarian militias and terrorist organisations, including Houthis who are killing Yemenis and undermining all peace efforts.

Moreover, he urged the permanent and other members of the Security Council to protect international security and peace and put an end to Iranian terrorist activities threatening waterways in the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait.
