ABYAN (Debriefer)--Clashes have resumed between the forces of the government and the UAE-backed southern transitional council in Yemen's southern province of Abyan.
The two sides exchanged heavy fire using artillery and other heavy and medium weapons in east of the capital city Zinjibar, local sources said on Saturday, adding that other clashes also took place in the areas of Al-Tariya and Al-Sheikh Salim east of Zinjibar.
On Thursday, a government official said the two sides failed to agree on the formation of a power-sharing government in accordance with a mechanism which was presented by Saudi Arabia in July to accelerate the Riyadh agreement.
The agreement was signed in November 2019.
The formation of the government can't happen before implementing the military and security part of the agreement, the official said, according to Aljazeera TV.
The STC has not implemented any term of the military and security part, the official added.
The council has accused the government of obstructing the formation of the new government and the implementation of the mechanism to accelerate the Riyadh agreement within its policy of "collective punishment of the southern provinces".
The mechanism also called for a cessation of hostilities and taking forces out of main cities.
