ISTANBUL (Debriefer)--Yemeni human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman said on Tuesday that Germany's ban on arms exports to Saudi Arabia will contribute to establishing peace in Yemen.
Saudi Arabia leads an Arab military coalition, including the United Arab Emirates, which has been fighting in support of the internationally recognised government of Yemen since March 2015.
Karman wrote on Twitter: "I welcome Germany’s ban on arms sales to Saudi Arabia which uses such weapons to commit killings and horrible crimes against Yemenis".
"This decision will prevent Saudi Arabia from accessing more death tools, and committing more crimes. It will definitely contribute to achieving Peace for Yemen and other places subject to Saudi abuses," she added.
She called on the US and other countries to stop all kinds of support of the Saudi-led war.
Separately, spokesman for the Houthi group, Mohammed Abdulsalam, said his group appreciates the German move, calling on other countries to take a similar step "at least as a humanitarian position in the face of brutal aggressiveness which poses a danger to international peace and security".
Yemen has been devastated by a six-year war which broke out after the Houthi seizure of power in September 2014. The war escalated after the Saudi-led military started in March 2015, causing the world's largest humanitarian crisis.
