HUDAYDAH (Debriefer)--A senior officer in the pro-government joint forces was killed battling the Houthi fighters in Yemen's western province of Hudaydah on Saturday, local sources said.
Col. Haytham Barih, the chief of staff of the fourth brigade which is part of the Tihamah resistance, was killed in clashes that broke out after the Houthis attacked the brigade in the district of Al-Tuhayta, the sources said.
A number of soldiers were killed and injured as well, the sources said, pointing out that the Houthis could not capture the brigade and retreated to the areas of Al-Fazah and Al-Jabaliah.
In the past three days, the pro-government forces withdrew from positions around Hudaydah, in a move that their spokesperson said came within the implementation of the Stockholm agreement.
The agreement was brokered by the UN between the internationally recognised government and the Iran-allied Houthi group in 2018.
The Houthis have seized those positions and announced today they have taken control of the entire province.
