UN Yemen war crimes team says Saudi Arabia, UAE lobbying against it

Chairperson of the UN Yemen war crimes probe team, Kamal Jendoubi, revealed that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have formed lobby groups to obstruct his team's work.

The two countries have been leading a coalition fighting in Yemen since 2015. They have been accused of human rights abuses that amount to war crimes.

In interview with Aljazeera, Jendoubi said: "We did not expect the reaction of the two countries to our work. We are doing our work professionally and neutrally".

"The refusal of the Yemeni government to cooperate with us after our mandate was renewed was politically motivated. It will force us to find other ways and sources to documents human rights violations".

In its report released last week, the team accused all the warring parties, including the internationally recognised government and the Houthis, of possible war crimes including indiscriminate attacks against civilians, arbitrary arrests and imprisonment and torture of detainees.

"The renewal of our mandate demonstrated UN desire to monitor and document violations in Yemen," Jendoubi said, pointing out that they had submitted a confidential list of human rights violators to the UN.

The Saudi/UAE-led coalition described the team's report as biased.

"The mechanism to hold violators to account will be set up by the UN Security Council. Our job is to document violations not to make decisions on them because we are not a judicial body," he added.

He called on all parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and avoid targeting food and medical aid delivered for vulnerable people in the country.

"Suspicious platforms have been used to undermine my credibility. But I have confidence my reports will contribute to ending the conflict and the man-made suffering in Yemen".
