LAHIJ (Debriefer)--The security authorities in Yemen's southern province of Lahij on Sunday thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons and ammunition for the Houthis.

A security checkpoint in the area of Al-Daba seized a truck carrying weapons including night vision goggles and ammunition including artillery shells concealed beneath products, security sources said.

The truck was travelling from the interim capital of the internationally recognised government, Aden, to the Houthi-controlled district of Al-Rahidah in southern Taiz province, they said.

Battles have recently intensified between the government and Houthi forces in the southeastern parts of Taiz.

The government said its forces have advanced and inflicted losses upon the Houthis, retaking strategic positions in the areas of Hayfan and Al-Ahkoom.
