Riyadh (Debriefer) - The Saudi-led coalition Joint Forces have intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone heading for Saudi Arabia, the coalition spokesman said on Monday.
The bomb-laden drone was systematically fired by the Houthi group to deliberately target civilian objects and civilians in the Saudi southern region, Turki al-Maliki added in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency.
This comes hours after the United States called on the Houthis to stop their military attacks on Saudi and Yemeni lands, to desist from upsetting stability, and to show commitment to constructive participation in peace efforts exerted by the UN envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths.
On Sunday, the Arab coalition said in three separate statements that its forces downed four Houthi drones targeting Saudi territories.
While the statements did not locate where the drone was launched and intercepted, Saudi activists said they heard blasts over Najran and Jizan.
No official statement has been released by the Houthis, but spokesman for the group, Mohamed Abdul Salam, said in the last two days they would continue firing missiles until the Arab coalition stops war and lifts blockade.
Saudi Arabia has been leading a military coalition in Yemen since 26 March 2015, in support of forces loyal to President Hadi to retake areas controlled by the Iranian-backed Houthi group.
Since then, the Houthis have sent explosive-laden drones and boats and ballistic missiles targeting Saudi and Yemeni troops inside Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
