ADEN (Debriefer)--The hijacking of a cargo ship by the Houthi group off Yemen's western coast bore the hallmarks of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a Yemeni official said on Tuesday.

The incident remains the world of maritime piracy the IRGC has been responsible for since the Khomeini revolution, the Minister of Information Muammar Al-Eryani said in a statement he tweeted.

This terrorist operation confirms growing threat to the safety of cargo ships and shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, he said.

The Iran-allied Houthi group, which seized power in late 2014 and has since been fighting the forces of the internationally recognised government, hijacked the ship off Hudaydah province on Monday.

The Saudi-led coalition, which is fighting the group, said the UAE-flagged ship was carrying medical equipment for a Saudi field hospital on the island of Socotra.

Tehran and the Houthi sectarian militia are attempting to control straits to threaten international interests amid international silence and failure to deter them and stop their terrorist activities, Al-Eryani said, urging the international community to take immediate action to protect international peace and security off Yemen and designate the Houthis as a terrorist group.
