Shabwa (Debriefer) A terrorist attack on Wednesday targeted a security checkpoint in the southern city of Ataq, Shabwa provincial capital, leaving 10 soldiers of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) troops killed or injured.
More than 30 Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) suspects attacked a checkpoint of the so called Shabwa Defense Forces (SDF) at Ataq gateway, local sources said.
Five soldiers were killed and another five were injured in the attack, the sources added.
The attack comes hours after the terrorist group admitted the death of Yunis Mohamed Oudh al-Qashaori, one of its leaders, who was killed last month.
Also known as Abu Ali al-Shabwani, AQAP leader was killed on 11 May in fighting with security forces after the man tried to commit a "terrorist act in Ataq," security sources said on condition of anonymity.
Last May also saw an attack that targeted SDF with an explosive device in al-Sawda area, west Ataq, leaving three soldiers killed and one injured.
Still in May, commander of the SDF seventh brigade, Major Majid al-Nissi, survived an attempted assassination that claimed the lives of two of his bodyguards in Maifa'a district, Shabwa.
Earlier in the same month, unknown gunmen attacked a patrol of the 30th infantry brigade in al-Saeed district, south Shabwa, leaving three soldiers wounded.
