The internationally recognized government of Yemen on Monday launched the AdenNet internet service provider within a package of telecommunications projects in a move which officials and observers said will break the Houthi monopoly of the telecommunications services in the country.
The $100 million project was inaugurated by President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and Prime Minister, Ahmed Ubaid bin Dagher, in the temporary capital of Aden, the pro-government Saba news agency reported.
It will start operation next year.
The package also included the Aden international gate, the Aden 4G company, the Aden wireless internet service provider, the Aden control center and others.
The Houthi Group has been controlling all government institutions in the capital Sanaa including the telecommunications corporation which is the only provider of the internet service across the country, since it seized power and ousted the government in late 2014.
The internet service quality has deteriorated largely across Yemen since the war began.
Prime Minister, Ahmed Ubaid bin Dagher, said the AdenNet will provide a better internet service for less prices, adding that backup stations will be installed in Hodeidah province and Mukalla city in Hadramout province.
