U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke on Friday about the necessity of changing NATO as it must grow and change or risks becoming obsolete, and NATO will be outdated.
After 70 years of NATO, it needs to grow and change. It needs to face reality and the challenges of the present," Pompeo said during a question-and-answer session after delivering a speech in Berlin.
Countries think they can get the benefit of security without providing the alliance with the resources they need, and if they don't meet their obligations, there is a risk that NATO will become ineffective or outdated," Pompeo told the news conference.
The French president , Emmanuel Macron , criticized the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the outcome of the differences between the allies ,saying that "This alliance is now in a state of clinical death."
“What we are currently experiencing is the brain death of NATO,” Mr. Macron told The Economist magazine which was published Thursday, adding "The strategic objectives of NATO must be clarified. "
Regarding recent developments in Syria with the withdrawal of US troops and the Turkey’s military operation against Kurdish forces, Macron said:“You have no coordination whatsoever of strategic decision-making between the United States and its NATO allies. None,” .
Adding.‘‘You have an uncoordinated aggressive action by another NATO ally, Turkey, in an area where our interests are at stake,” he added. “There has been no NATO planning, nor any coordination.’’
