The Houthi announcement to release all Baha'i detainees in Sana'a is a positive step, the UN especial envoy to Yemen said Thursday.

"Pleased to hear the Ansar Allah announcement that they will soon release all Baha'i detainees in Sana'a," Martin Griffiths added on a tweet carried by his office.

"I hope the decision will be implemented soonest and Baha'is will live in safety and with dignity in Yemen.

"A positive step towards releasing more prisoners and detainees of war," the UN envoy said.

On Wednesday, the Houthi Supreme Political Council's chairman, Mahdi al-Mashat announced the release of all Baha'i detainees and a pardon for the sect's leader, Hamid Haidara, who had been sentenced to death.
