Abyan (Debriefer) - The Yemeni southern governorate of Abyan early on Monday saw new infighting pitting the official government troops and the Southern Transitional Council (STC) forces.

The two sides exchanged shelling with heavy guns in the eastern part of Zinjobar, the provincial capital of Abyan, local sources said.

"Sounds of clashes in Sheikh Salem and al-Taria fronts east Zinjobar were heard in the neighboring cities," the sources added.

Late on Sunday, spokesman for the Emirati-backed STC forces accused the government troops of firing mortar shells at STC sites, violating the ceasefire.

The STC forces in the eastern part of Modea targeted an armored vehicle of the government troops, as heading for Shoqra as part of government reinforcements from Shabwa, leaving some of them injured, Mohamed al-Naqib added on Twitter.

For months now, Abyan has seen battles between forces affiliated to the government and the STC.

Late last June, Riyadh said the Yemeni government and STC reached a ceasefire in Abyan, whose control is shared by the two parties.

But the fragile truce has not held long on the ground, as it was interrupted by breaches since the first hours of its declaration, with two sides trading blames for these violations.
