Abyan (Debriefer) - Thursday saw skirmishes renewed between the Yemeni UN-recognized government troops and the Emirati-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) in the southern governorate of Abyan.
The government troops attacked STC forces' sites in Sala Valley west Shoqra district in Abyan, spokesman for the STC-led fourth military region tweeted.
The STC forces "foiled the attack and inflicted painful blows to the government troops," Mohamed al-Naqip added.
The government troops tried to launch an attack towards al-Tariah east Zinjobar and Barbara area in the left sector, the spokesman said.
Late on Wednesday, two sides exchanged shelling using heavy weapons in Sheikh Salem an al-Tariah fronts east Abyan's provincial capital local sources said.
No immediate comments have been released by the government troops on the STC accusations.
Both rivals trade blames for breaching the ceasefire, which they claim commitment to.
Last May, the Saudi-led coalition announced a mechanism to accelerate the application of Riyadh Agreement inked between the government and STC on 5 November 2019.
The deal provides for ceasefire, STC abandonment of its self-governance, and formation of a new 24-portfolio government with southern provinces given 12 seats, 4 of which assigned to the STC.
